What are the Doshas?

Ayurveda teaches us that the whole world is composed of five elements - earth, water, fire, air, and space. When the five elemental energies mix within us, they become the tri-doshas. The subtle forces within that can create unique patterns/habits, physical, emotional and physiological states of being. When you know your doshic constitution, you can more intelligently and intuitively take care of your well being and move into a place of a balanced mind and body.

The word dosha means “force” or “fault”, or something that can go out of balance easily. According to Ayurveda, it is understood that imbalances within the doshas ultimately lead to imbalances, disorders or disease in the body or mind. We are all made up of a unique proportion of the doshas, however there is always a predominance of one or more doshic qualities. Ayurveda gives us a model to look at each individual as a unique makeup of the three doshas, and thereby design specific treatments that address a person's health challenges.

The Three Doshas and their tendencies;

Space & Air combine to form Vata

Vata governs the principles of movement and alertness.

When aggravated it may result in restlessness, feeling scattered, anxious, indecisive, insomnia, IBS, intolerant of the cold and excessive thinking.

Water & Fire combine to form Pita.

Pita governs transformation and assimilation.

When aggravated it may result in frustration, anger, perfectionism, criticalness, irritability, skin issues, inflammation, excessive body heat and perspiration.

Earth & Water combine to form Kapha.

Kapha governs stability and growth.

When aggravated it may result in possessiveness, stubbornness, depression, rigidity, lethargy, constipation, allergies, slow digestion.

The aim is to create harmony by re-establishing balance of the doshas. These may change throughout your life as conditions change, such as age, season, dietary choices, stress, exercise or emotional state. There are many ways of balancing your constitution, such as taking herbs recommended by an Ayurvedic doctor, daily abhyanga with specific oils for doshic imbalance, lifestyle changes, diet changes and living in alignment with nature and the seasons. Ultimately, when we are in balance we are creating longevity in the mind and body and carving the path to a healthy and thriving long life!
